The movie industry operates much like any other business.
Most actors are employees and if they're not performing they're treated like any other bad employee...they get fired.
Ryan Gosling
The Lovely Bones (2009)
Gosling was fired by director Peter Jackson after showing up on set 60 pounds overweight. The actor thought his character, Jack Salmon, should be 210 lbs. Jackson disagreed and ousted Gosling for the decision, replacing him with Mark Wahlberg.
Samantha Morton
Her (2013)
Morton was replaced by Scarlett Johansson as the voice of Her's unique AI operating system when director Spike Jonze decided to go in another direction. He has explained it generally, saying it just wasn't working with the talented English actress.
